Beach Kiosk and Boat Refuge
Jaguanum Island, Brazil. Completed, 2020. In collaboration with Estudio Flume.
Beach kiosk and boat’s refuge for a ‘caiçara’ couple is located in Jaguanum Island within the Mangaratiba bay. Caiçaras are the traditional inhabitants of the coastal regions of the southeastern and southern Brazil. They descended from indigenous people, Europeans and Africans. Their traditional way of life based on subsistence agriculture, hunting and fishing is threatened by real estate speculation, restrictive laws and declining fish stocks. The project consist of a kitchen, toilet and a covered area for tables that during the evenings can be used as a refuge for fishermen’s boats. The aim is to promote an eco-friendly tourism into the island selling local produce.
